A Maiden North Carolina man purchased a smoker, a covered grill like device that allows you to smoke food such as turkey, at an auction. Upon being the the winning bidder he proceeded to open his new cooking device to inspect it. Inside he discovered what appeared to be a piece of wood wrapped in paper, however, upon unwrapping he instead discovered a human leg that had been cut off about 3 inches above the knee.
The smoker was acquired at a storage facility auction where they auction off anything left in unpaid garages. Police we able to track down the original renters of the space Peg Steele and her son John Wood. Steele explained that her son had his leg amputated following a plane crash and kept the leg for religious reasons. I'm not 100% sure what preserving your soul for the afterlife and a leg hidden in a smoker have to do with each other, but we've all heard stranger things...I think. His reasoning behind it was he wanted to be buried with his leg, as a whole man.
His mother also added that "The rest of the family was very much against it".
This leads me to my next question. Why would you have something amputated and then store it inside something you cook with? Wood's response was "I didn't have anything else to secure it in. There were no macabre intentions."
Before it's smoker home, the leg has also lived in another interesting location. Following the plane crash Wood expressed his intent to keep the bone from the leg. The hospital approved, however, instead of delivering the bone, they brought the whole leg. So, the only logical place for storage was his freezer. According to his Marin Wood-Lytle, his sister, she "wouldn't even get a Pepsi out of his refrigerator."
On the upside, the leg and it's original owner will be reunited as John Wood plans to reclaim his prodigal leg. Wood-Lytle was watching TV and saw the man who found her brother's leg and thought to herself "it just seems to never go away."
At least this bit of news doesn't take place in my home state of Florida where all the other weird news seems to come from.
