Just what you've always wanted to know! How to create RAR files on your Mac! This Mac How-to will show you step by step how to load the command line version of RAR that will enable to use the GUI versions of RAR based archivers.
Ok, so maybe this isn't your top priorty, it can still be extrememely helpful. Personally I enjoy the use of the RAR format mostly due to the fact that I can create split archives. Instead of sending one 1GB file, I
can send ten 100mb files. This is much more efficenct and allows the end user to download in smaller chunks, thus if the transfer goes AWOL they don't have to download the full file again.
Recently I had to install this on my machine again and figured there'd be some of you out there who would like to do the same. Shall we begin?
- First off you will need to download a copy of RAR. We're going to download the command line version, as this is a requirement to use the love GUI based versions. The easiest way to aquire this is at RarLab.
- Download the latest version to your Desktop. Double click on the file once it finishes it with automatically unpack the .tar.gz for you, and give you a nice rar folder.
- Open Terminial. This can be located under Applications/Utilities/

- Take note of your shortname, this will be used later on in the installation. On my computer, my user is 'user' (very convienent) Refer to the attached screen shot and you can see the username right after my computer name (raptor).
- Type: cd /Desktop/rar/
- Press enter and type: su root
- Enter the root password and press enter.
- Now the shortname for your user account will come in handy.
- Press enter and type: install -c -o shortnamehere rar /bin
- All done! Simply type: 'exit' and you're good to go!
Have a PC? Then there's a much easier way for you to get up and running! Simply Download WinRAR from RarLab and you'll be up and running in no time!
